Some Lesser Known Facts About Ahmed Magdy

Ahmed entered the world of art during his university time when he joined the “Al-Tami” theatre group, where he worked as an actor and assistant director for 3 years.

After making his debut short film in 2007, Ahmed participated in a workshop titled Al Zat Wa Al Madina – Al Qahira (The Self and the City- Cairo), through which he directed his second documentary film, ZIZO (2007).

After directing his second documentary, Ahmed took admission in the School of Cinema, where he graduated after directing the film Cream Cake (2008). The film won the Jury Award at each of the Algerian Independent Film Festival and the Jordan Independent Short Film Festival. The film also won the Silver Hawk award at the Arab Film Festival in Rotterdam.

Ahmed was a jury member of the Short Films Competition Jury at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 2012.

Madgy enjoys photography and can also play numerous instruments. He also practices contemporary dance.

In 2013, Magdy received the SANAD Development Grant from the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, and the AFAC Production Grant in 2014 for his directorial debut film, The Giraffe (2018).

While shooting for the TV series Al-Khorog (2016), Ahmed himself prepared half of the slogans and quotes for his character. He also fully acted his role in the 2012 TV series Napoleon Wel Mahrousa in French. In an interview, he said

I graduated from a French school and I have a good accent, so it wasn’t difficult but rather unique,”

Ahmed’s film, The Giraffe, had its world premiere at the 40th Cairo International Film Festival (SIFF) in November 2018. The film received critical acclaim, especially from Lebanese film critic Mohammed Rouda at the Marrakech International Film Festival, who described it as the best Arab film of the year.

Ahmed is an environmentalist and is often seen spreading awareness on his social media handles. He participated in a campaign that calls for limiting the use of plastic products using #KefayaPlastic (#EnoughPlastic) on his Instagram page.

Magdy took part in an online panel discussion at the Arab Film Festival in Toronto titled “Demystifying Feature Filmmaking for Emerging Arab Filmmakers.”

Ahmed is a women’s rights activist. He took part in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence event. The event was organised by the British Council, the European Union, and Cairo University in November 2019.

Magdy has participated in more than 30 independent projects. He has directed “Ella El-Bah” (“To the Sea…”), a production by the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies department at the American University in Cairo.

As an actor, Magdy received several awards for acting in highly acclaimed films in festivals, such as Birds of the Nile (2009), Microphone (2010), The Gate of Departure (2014), Ali, The Goat and Ibrahim (2016), and Mawlana (2016), alongside several successful TV series.

Ahmed was selected by Gossips, a digital platform, to be featured on the front page of their first issue for the New Year 2022.

Ahmed served as a member of the jury of several festivals, including the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival 2012, the Aswan International Women’s Film Festival 2021, the Cairo International Film Festival 2022, and the Luxor African Film Festival 2023.
