Some Lesser Known Facts About Kaku

  • Kaku was born in Ciudadela, Argentina, to parents of Paraguayan descent. His grandparents, parents, and older siblings, all were born in Paraguay and later moved to Argentina.
  • He was raised by his parents close to Barrio Ejercito de Los Andes, also known as Fuerte Apache.
  • Growing up, he used to watch Andrés Iniesta play Football and enjoyed it. There were two Football pitches near his house, where he used to play regularly with other boys. People in Ciudadela were crazy about Football, and Kaku’s house was no different; he and three of his younger siblings indulged in the sport at a young age. All of them are left-footed No. 10s.
  • When Kaku was 14 years old, he left his home to join Huracán’s youth team. His mother also travelled along to help Kaku clean and cook.
  • Kaku began his Football journey in 2013 with the youth system of Huracán.

  • In the same year, he made his professional debut, playing for Huracán in the Primera B Nacional.
  • On 12 October 2013, Kaku scored his first goal during a 4–1 win against Aldosivi.
  • On 14 December 2014, Kaku played a key role in Huracán’s promotion back to the top division after three seasons, scoring the crucial second goal in a 4–1 victory over Atlético Tucumán.

  • Kaku played a key role in Huracán’s win in the Copa Argentina (2013–14) and Supercopa Argentina (2014).
  • Kaku made 94 league appearances for the club Huracán and scored 9 goals.
  • In 2015, Kaku was selected by Argentina’s U-20 manager, Humberto Grondona, to represent Argentina in the FIFA U‑20 World Cup in New Zealand.
  • On 23 December 2017, Kaku was transferred to the New York Red Bulls for around $6.25 million.
  • He made his debut for the New York Red Bulls on 1 March 2018 in the CONCACAF Champions League against Olimpia. The New York Red Bulls established a 2-0 victory in the match.

  • In 2018, made his decision to switch to the Paraguay national team and filed a one-time switch request with FIFA to play for Paraguay. His request was approved by FIFA on 23 May 2018.
  • Soon, he was called up to the Paraguay national team for a friendly against Japan.
  • On 13 March 2018, Kaku netted his first goal for New York during a 3–1 win against Club Tijuana in the CONCACAF Champions League, playing a key role in helping the team reach the tournament semifinals for the first time in its history.

  • On 14 April 2018, Kaku scored his first league goal for New York in a 3–1 victory over the Montreal Impact.
  • Over 72 MLS appearances, Kaku scored 13 goals and contributed numerous assists, earning Newcomer of the Year in 2018.
  • Later, he was rumoured to be transferred to Mexico’s Club América and Tijuana. However, none materialised.
  • On 12 June 2018, Kaku made his international debut for Paraguay as a substitute in the second half of the friendly match against Japan.

  • In February 2021, Kaku signed with Al-Taawoun, leaving Major League Soccer amid a legal dispute over contract obligations.
  • He scored a goal in his second match for the club, making an immediate impact.
  • In 2022-23, Kaku was named Saudi Pro League Player of the Season after finishing as top assist provider.

  • Kaku played 52 league games for Al-Taawoun, scoring 16 goals.

  • In 2025, he was a part of the Al Ain squad that competed in the World Cup.
  • In teenage, Kaku desired to gift a house to his parents. In an interview, while talking about the same, he said,

    When I was a boy, I dreamed about buying my parents a house. I didn’t think just about playing football, I wanted them to have a better life.”

    When he moved to MLS he finally bought a house for his family. However, his mother was not there to witness it.

  • Kaku’s mother played a pivotal role in his life, supporting him during his youth and early professional career. She encouraged him to keep going when things weren’t going well and helped him keep his feet on the ground when success came his way at Huracan. Kaku lost his mother in September 2017.

  • As a tribute to his mother, Kaku wore a jersey with the name “R. Gamarra” when he joined the New York Red Bulls.
  • In an interview, while talking about his mother, Kaku said,

    Yes, she was very important for me because she helped me think about how to manage money and not waste it. When you are very young and you get money you don’t know what to do, whether you should buy yourself a car, but she was very important for me.”

  • Kaku’s wife Karen is also from the same Ciudadela neighbourhood. They met each other for the first time when Kaku was 14 years old.
