- Manal was born and raised in a Muslim family in Kuwait.

- Earlier, Manal loved watersports and she even got certified as a scuba diver in 2009. She could not pursue her underwater passion for much longer as she developed some claustrophobia from diving deep into the underwater.
- Manal ran her first marathon in 2014 in Dubai which was dedicated to raising money for the people in Syria.
- Manal apart from being an athlete is also an activist and advocates for women facing discrimination for wearing hijab. In 2014, she created a Facebook group called Surviving Hijab. The group is an open platform and has about one million members where women share their personal experiences of wearing hijab.
- Manal’s Facebook group was awarded the Facebook Community Leadership Award by Facebook in 2019.
- Throughout her athletic career, Manal has run five of the world’s six major marathons in New York, Berlin, Chicago, Boston, and London. She also competed in the Great Wall Marathon in China.
