- Mattar Bin Lahej was born and brought up in Dubai.
- In childhood, when his friends used to play football, he used to make drawings in the sand. Gradually, he started developing an interest in painting.
- In the 1980s, he faced various difficulties in making a career in art, as there was very little scope for artists in the UAE at that time. However, his father supported him to make a career in art.
- His work has been displayed in various group exhibitions like Sharjah Biennial in Sharjah (1996), Emirati Expressions in UAE (2009), Liquid Identity in Venice (2012), Emirati Expressions in UAE (2013), and Sikka Art Fair in Dubai (2015).
- In 2005, he started his art gallery Marsam Mattar. However, due to a lack of finances, he found it difficult to run his gallery. He also started his art class programme to educate people more about the arts.
- Some of his solo exhibitions were at Colors in Abu Dhabi (2008), Movement of Stillness in Dubai (2009), Contemporary Istanbul in Turkey (2010), and Index in Dubai (2012).
- He is the artist and calligrapher of the Museum of Future in Dubai, which is also considered “the only building that speaks Arabic.”
- He transformed the lyrics of the national anthem using the ‘Matar’ font on the occasion of the 50th foundation anniversary of the UAE.
