Some Lesser Known Facts About Ramy Essam

  • Before music, Ramy was passionate about football and dreamed of becoming a footballer until the age of 17. Once he met a friend who was playing a guitar, and he asked him to teach him. From there, he discovered his talent in music.
  • Ramy sings in both English and Arabic. His music is a fusion of Egyptian flavor and hiphop influences, inspired by hard rock and grunge.
  • Ramy met his favourite poet, Amgad Al Qahwagi, when he was 20 years old, who introduced him to political poetry. After meeting him, Ramy decided that he would pursue a career in music and not architecture.
  • In 2009, Ramy established the band “Mashakel” (translated to “Problems”) and, through this band, began to sing about a free life, illustrating the simple daily problems he faced, as did all Egyptians, under Mubarak’s regime.
  • Ramy came under the spotlight from Egyptian revolution in 2011 when he became the voice of revolution through his songs. He created the crowd’s anti-Mubarak chants with his song Irhal [ Leave] which became an anthem of the protests.
  • After the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, Ramy was detained by the police when he returned to the Tahrir Square as he was identified as an agitator and was beaten by the police.
  • Apart from music, Ramy also advocates for human rights and stands for gender equality, freedom, social justice, equity, health care, minority rights, education and peace. All the net profits from his song The Camp which was released in 2017 were donated to Beyond Association, a Lebanese NGO which works for the education and support for displaced children in Lebanon.
  • Rame became a sensation after the Egyptian revolution in 2011 and performed multiple Songs in Different Places across Egypt. He also performed in several other places such as England , South Africa, Sweden, and Germany. His song Irhal was named to be one of the 100 songs that effected Humanity by Time out London.

  • In January 2012, Ramy released his album Manshourat from Tahrir Square.
  • Ramy’s songs have been banned in Egypt since 2013 and he was forbidden from performing in public places.
  • Since 2014, Ramy has been living in exile since 2014.
  • Ramy’s song Balaha was released in February 2018 which aimed to spread awareness about the corruption and opression in Egypt under the regime of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Both the lyricist and director of the song Galal El-Behairy and Shady Habash were arrested. In 2020, Shady died in the custody.
  • Ramy’s one of the most popular song is Segn Bel Alwan (feat. Malikah), a song about gender equality and imprisoned women. The song has over 8.7 million views on YouTube as of 2025.
  • As of July 2025, Ramy has 95.7k followers on Instagram, 670k followers on Facebook, 288k followers on Twitter, and 489k subscribers on YouTube.
