- Since the early 20th century, his family has been known as the most prominent business and political families of Dubai.
- After graduating from college during the late 1970s, he worked as a customs officer at Dubai’s port.
- In 1985, he was appointed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to be chairman of the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) in Dubai.
- In April 2001, he became the chairman of Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation.
- He has witnessed JAFZA’s expansion from hosting 19 companies during the mid-1980s to approximately 7,500 in 2020.
- In 2006, DP World bought the British company Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation for $6.9 billion. In 2010, DP World became the third biggest port operator and remained in the top three for several years.
- On 30 May 2007, he was appointed to the Board as Chairman of DP World in Dubai.
- In 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University in Dubai.
