Some Lesser Known Facts About Ali F. Mostafa
- Mostafa was born and raised in a Muslim family to an Emirati father and a British mother.
- Mostafa was interested in filmmaking since his childhood. He used to do experiments in making his own short films and mock TV ads.
- After completing his education, Mostafa established a division from an existing company focusing on set and interior design.
- Mostafa launched his own production company, AFM Films, in 2007, producing feature films, short films, documentaries, TV commercials, and corporate films.
- Mostafa has directed numerous short films in his career. His film Under the Sun (2005) was screened at the DIFF and won the Emirates Film Competition in 2006. The film was also screened at the Rome, Rhode Island and San Francisco International Film Festivals.
- Mostafa made City of Life (2009) to reveal the true side of Dubai to the world. He said in an interview,
I was tired of people comparing Dubai to a Disneyland. Most of them take one look at the glitzy buildings and assume it’s an artificial place. My film has none of that. It has real people with real problems. Like any other city in the world, my film shows both the positives and the negatives.”
- Mostafa faced issues during the initial days of the release of his film City of Life (2009), as some cinemas refused to show his movie, claiming that the movie showed Dubai in a negative light. In the first week of the release, the film made a collection of 500,000 dirhams according to data produced by Italia Film International.
- Besides filmmaking, Mostafa also likes to indulge himself in humanitarian work. He has participated with Oxfam, whilst having also taken on the role of goodwill ambassador for Visit Britain.
- Mostafa’s film From A to B, released in 2014, was the first Emirati film to open the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in October 2014. The film depicts a story of three best friends who take a road trip from Abu Dhabi to Beirut, challenging stereotypical perceptions of Middle Eastern culture.
- Mostafa’s film The Worthy (2016) premiered at the BFA London Film Festival in October 2016 and received a gala premiere at the Dubai Film Festival in December 2016. It is the Arab’s first post-apocalyptic thriller film.
