Controversies | Sentenced to jail for 8 years by an Egyptian court After leaving Egypt in 2017, Amr said that he could no longer return to Egypt as doing so could land him in jail for up to eight years. He shared a post on his social media account in which he said that he was informed about his case by a lawyer of being absentia in two cases; one for spreading false news and the other for insulting state institutions. He also requested the authorities to get a copy of the two files that have been issued against him in May 2018 but his request was refused. He has been residing in Spain since 2017. Some Lesser Known Facts About Amr Waked
- Amr was 17 years old when he first stepped into theatre. Amr told in an interview that his first visit to the theatre was a mere coincidence. A person from his neighbourhood had an audition scheduled in the theatre and Amr also went to the theatre with him.
- When Amr acted for the first time in a theatre play, he became completely nervous and was unable to act properly. Being ashamed of his performance, he disappeared from the theatre. However, a week later, he was informed by his friend that he received a call from the theatre to play the role of a corpse, which he denied.
- During his early days as an actor, Amr joined the Temple Theatre Troop in 1994, and the Yaaru Theatre Troop in 1999, where he developed his skills as an actor.
- Besides acting, Amr has also served in the Egyptian army.
- Amr started his journey as a producer in 2005 after he launched his communication and production house Zad Communication & Production LLC. The first film produced under the label was Winter of Discontent. The film was directed by Ibrahim El Batout, which opened at the 69th Venice Film Festival in 2012.
- After making his debut in international films in 2005, Amr has since appeared in many other international films and TV shows such as House Of Saddam (2008) and Salmon Fishing In the Yemen (2011).

He was also criticized by the supporters of the Palestinian cause for working in Wonder Woman 1984 starring Israeli actress and former IDF soldier Gal Gadot.
- Amr participated in the anti-government protests which took place in February 2011 at Tahrir Square.
- Amr has always been a vocal critic of Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s government, often using his Twitter account to expose arrests and controversial political decisions. He has also said in many interviews that he has been facing non-stop harassment and threats since 2013 for his political views.

- Amr has starred in both seasons of Ramy Youssef’s award-winning hit show Ramy as Ramy’s father Farouk. In an interview, he said that to fit into the role of a father, he had to shave his head. He further said,
I decided that on the spot. I sat there staring in the mirror, and I said, ‘Hey Ramy, what would you think of your dad was bald?’ He said, ‘What are you talking about, my dad is bald.’ I said ‘f***, I should be bald then. And I shaved it.
